Chapter 373 Florida Statutes (F.S.) gives the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) the authority to establish and enforce guidelines for construction within floodways and floodplains.
As established in 40B-4.3000, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), there are five works of the district rivers:
Consider reviewing our relevant agency rules, specifically the works of the district criteria found in 40B-4, F.A.C. To view the location of floodways, please view the Flood Insurance study for each of our counties in our Document Center or visit www.srwmdfloodreport.com.
The District has permitting requirements for works or development in the floodway of a Works of the District including the construction of new single-family dwellings and improvements to existing residences.
This means that anyone planning to build a house, deck, porch, dock, seawall, walkway, bulkhead, storage shed or any other structure within a flood way must first apply for a works of the district development permit from the District prior to construction.
No development or clearing of land will be allowed within 75 feet of a river.
Please be advised that if your project is located along, adjacent to, or within a sovereign submerged land, as defined in Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (FDEP) Chapter 18-21, Florida Administrative Code, a Sovereign Submerged Lands (SSL) authorization may be required. Most small or minor activities requiring a SSL authorization are handled and issued by the District. If you have questions about this permit, please call District staff at 386.362.1001, or contact FDEP (http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/wetlands/erp/ssla.htm).
Visit our Document Center to view and download or print Works of the District forms such as the Application for General Work of the District Development Permit and As-Built forms. These forms can be found in the Works of the District Folder or the Environmental Resource Permitting Folder.
If you own or control property adjacent to or near the Alapaha, Aucilla, Santa Fe, Suwannee or Withlacoochee rivers, your property may be located within a regulatory flood way. A permit may be required from the Suwannee River Water Management District prior to initiating any of the following activities:
