LIVE OAK, FLA., Nov. 12, 2020 – Flood risk can change over time due to new development, weather patterns and other factors. The Suwannee River Water Management District (District) plans to present a newly developed Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood maps and updated risks to residents and business owners of Hamilton County at a virtual meeting on November 19 at 6 p.m.
As a cooperating technical partner, the District is assisting with the coordination of FEMA’s Risk Mapping, Assessment and Planning (Risk MAP) program. Within the program, the District updates flood maps which will involve collecting map risk data, assessing present and future risks, planning for risk and reducing (or mitigating) risk of potential flooding.
At the November 19 meeting, the District will discuss the newly developed flood hazard areas. The flood hazard areas include regions along the Alapaha River. FEMA Risk MAP flood program is tailored to the needs of each community. Participation in public meetings is encouraged for citizens and community officials to stay up-to-date on the progress of the program.
