The Suwannee River Water Management District (District) is celebrating June as Great Outdoors Month. The District encourages residents and visitors to spend time outdoors recreating on District lands and enjoying the many scenic rivers in North Florida.
The District is home to 11 major rivers, including the Suwannee, Ichetucknee, Santa Fe, Aucilla and Steinhatchee rivers. Over 70 miles of trails on District lands are dedicated to hiking. The District acquires lands for flood control, water quality protection, and natural resource conservation. The lands are open to the public for recreational use such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching and many more fun activities.
Goose Pasture Campground and J.H. Anderson, Jr. Memorial Park at Rock Bluff Springs have reopened to residents and visitors following temporary closures due to COVID-19. In addition to these tracts, Big Shoals Public Lands, Falling Creek Falls Park, Santa Fe River County Park (S.R. 47) and most boat ramps on the Suwannee River including Gibson Park Boat Ramp and Ivey Memorial Park Boat Ramp have recently reopened to the public.
Recreational users are reminded to follow the direction of Governor DeSantis and to uphold Center for Disease Control guidance. The District encourages residents and visitors to practice social distancing by avoiding gatherings larger than 50 people and distancing themselves a minimum of six feet from others.
The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. The District holds true to the belief of water for nature, water for people. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
