[ARCHIVED] SRWMD to host meetings to discuss flood maps for Alapaha, Aucilla watersheds

LIVE OAK, FLA., JULY 25, 2023 – Local property owners are encouraged to take part in the review of preliminary flood-risk maps for the Alapaha and Aucilla watersheds, which include parts of Hamilton, Jefferson, and Madison counties.

Public meetings will take place in Greenville and Jasper in August.

The meeting in Greenville, at the Greenville Senior Center on August 16, will focus on the Aucilla Watershed, which includes Jefferson and Madison counties. The August 17 meeting in Jasper will focus on the Alapaha Watershed, which includes Hamilton County, and will take place at the Jasper Civic Center.

Both meetings will begin at 6 p.m. Residents can arrive any time before 8 pm as there is not a scheduled presentation.

Representatives from the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be on hand to discuss the ongoing development of flood risk maps for the region.

The District is seeking to inform residents, along with city and county officials, of the new preliminary flood risk maps. The preliminary maps are expected to become effective next year. Maps are revised periodically to educate and assist property owners with updated and current information on their risk of flooding.

For those who cannot attend in-person, an online option is available at www.SRWMDfloodreport.com/virtual. The information to be presented at the August 16 and 17 meetings is also currently available at the link.

The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. The District holds true to the belief of water for nature, water for people. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
