SRWMD celebrates summer kickoff, Fourth of July festivities

Press Releases and News Posted on July 02, 2025

LIVE OAK, FLA., JULY 2, 2025 – With warm weather, clear blue skies, and plenty of sunshine, summer has officially arrived in Florida — and the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) invites you to celebrate the season by exploring the springs, rivers, and natural lands that make this region truly special.

As families gear up for summer adventures – and the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend – there’s no better time to explore the beauty of natural Florida. It's a great time to appreciate and enjoy Florida’s rich natural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities.

“Connecting with nature is a great way to stay active and support a healthy lifestyle,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “With so many outdoor activities available across North Florida, summer is the perfect time to explore, unwind, and enjoy all that the natural environment has to offer.”

From swimming in clear, natural springs and ambling rivers to hiking or horseback riding through peaceful forests, North Florida offers various opportunities to connect with nature and explore the outdoors.

Recreational opportunities afforded to residents and visitors through District-owned lands can be found at https://map.mysuwanneeriver.com/

As you explore, remember to #LeaveNoLitter. The District urges everyone to enjoy local springs, rivers, lakes, and public lands responsibly by picking up trash and protecting the environment. This is especially crucial in summer and around busy holiday weekends, like the Fourth of July, when increased outdoor activity and pollution can harm wildlife, trigger algae blooms, and make springs unsafe for swimming.

The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
